BACKGROUND
As part of the implementation of the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP), with support and funding from The World-Bank, six rail lines and one monorail have been identified for development and construction in Lagos State, Nigeria. The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) network is currently constructing the Blue and Red Rail Lines for the metro system and is in the process of developing another four rail lines.

The Red and Blue Lines will have more than 60km light rail line and over twenty-five stations. Some of the rail route will run on the surface in the central reservation of the Lagos Badagry Expressway between Igbo-Elerin Road (Okokomaiko) and Iganmu; and on an elevated platform between National Theatre to Marina. The Project is expected to facilitate the reduction in traffic congestion and travel time for commuters within the city, create affordable transport alternatives for residents, and stimulate economic development within the state. It is projected to transport about 500,000 people daily from inception and subsequently grow to more than two million over a 10-year period.

Reliance Rail International (RRI) has been contracted to provide the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) of rolling stock to allow the commencement of passenger services on the newly constructed Red Line of the LRMT network. RRI is also responsible for the transportation, testing, engineering, operations, maintenance and management of these trains. RRI will be bidding to work on the Blue Line and any subsequent lines added in future.
